Listen to what Walt Mossberg from Wall Street Journal has to say about Parallels...
Running Windows On MacRunning Windows on Mac is a convenient way to be able to continue to use Windows specialty programs that do not have Mac-compatible versions. While it makes sense for IT professionals to have two separate machines for running and testing PC and Mac programs, the regular computer user would love to be able to run all programs on a single machine.Although having to spend for a software program would entail some expense, it would still be cheaper than having to buy a separate machine. There are currently two options for running Windows on Mac. One is by installing Windows on a Boot Camp partition and the other is choosing between virtualization software that can be installed on the same partition that the Mac operating system is on. Although the virtualization process is not entirely seamless, it at least offers the option of not having to shut down the Mac OS and then booting the Windows OS from scratch. Running virtualization software has its own disadvantage though so a users priorities will have to be clearly defined before a choice could be made between using Boot Camp or a virtualization software for running Windows on Mac. The majority of IT experts seem to agree on the fact that choosing Boot Camp for running Windows on Mac translates to higher processor speed and better graphics display, but slows down hard disk performance. Virtualization software on the other hand maximizes hard disk performance but slows down processor speed and results in poor graphics. These results indicate that Boot Camp is ideal for gamers running Windows on Mac to play their favorite Windows-only games, while virtualization software such as VMWare Fusion, VirtualBox and Parallels Desktop for Mac are better suited for regular computer users who need to run Windows apps that do not require lightning-fast processor speeds and high-end graphics the way games do. With such clear differences in mind, it will be easier to make an informed choice on which software will perform best for running Windows on Mac. |
